Why I Wrote My Story

Imagine a healthy, rambunctious boy, just a few months from his second birthday, suddenly unable to walk, lift his head, or sit up. In August 1950, polio chose another victim. The virus left him almost completely paralyzed from his neck to his toes. After 12 years of intense physical therapy, he regained the strength to stand and walk with crutches but his challenges were just beginning. This series isn’t just about living with polio. It’s about the power of perseverance and the gifts that come with it. This keychain says it best, a gift from one of his daughters, “Whatever It Takes.”

Rotary Involvement

Rotary’s number one humanitarian service goal is to eradicate polio worldwide. Rich and his wife, Cheryl, District 6960 Polio Programs Co-Chairs, speak at Rotary Club meetings and other community organizations to update members on the latest developments in Rotary’s efforts to eradicate polio and encourage members to continue their donations to the PolioPlus fund. As a polio survivor, Rich has a unique story.
At the age of 18 months, he was paralyzed in almost every muscle from his neck to his toes. After 12 years of intensive therapy, he uses crutches to walk. Rich and Cheryl share their story to make the consequences of polio real. Rich and Cheryl also participate in many other Rotary community and international fundraisers. As Rotary members, Rich and Cheryl strongly advocate for Rotary’s motto – Service Above Self.
